Are there any special requirements for newly admitted attorneys?

Newly admitted active Virginia lawyers are exempt from the MCLE requirement for the year in which they are licensed. Your license date is the date on which the VBBE released the bar exam results.
Lawyers registering as active must also take the mandatory Harry L. Carrico Professionalism Course which is required within 24 months of registering with the VSB. Attorney Credits does not offer this course.

Does Attorney Credits offer courses for newly admitted attorneys?

No, the Harry L. Carrico Professionalism Course is only provided by the Virginia State Bar.

Can I carry hours forward to the next year?

Yes, a maximum of 12 hours can be carried over to the next reporting period, including 2 legal ethics hours. However, only 8 excess hours earned from online MCLE courses can be carried over to the next reporting period.

Does Attorney Credits verify my completion?

Yes, under the Virginia MCLE Requirements we must monitor your course attendance and completion. For online streaming video courses you must click on randomly inserted pop ups during the video to confirm that you are viewing the course. For downloadable courses we have embedded numeric codes in the courses. You must write these numbers down and then after you complete the course you must enter the codes on the website to obtain your course certificate. Please note that the date you enter the codes and get the certificate is the date that will be printed on the certificate.

Does Attorney Credits report my MCLE hours to the Virginia MCLE Board?

No. Attorney Credits does not report your completed courses to the Virginia MCLE Board. Virginia attorneys are required to self-report their hours. We do maintain a record of all your completed courses and you can access your certificates of completion at anytime from our website.

How do I report the completion of my MCLE requirement at the end of my compliance period?

At the end of the MCLE reporting cycle, the Virginia MCLE Board will send you a report listing the MCLE that you have completed. If this report is correct and you have completed the required Virginia MCLE, you do not need to take any further action. If the report shows that you are in noncompliance or the MCLE report is inaccurate, you have until December 15 to file an annual report correcting the error or demonstrating Virginia MCLE compliance.

Members of the Virginia State Bar may satisfy 8 of the required 12 VA Bar CLE hours through online CLE courses offered by Attorney Credits, including 2 required hours of legal ethics.

Virginia attorneys must complete 12 VA bar CLE hours each annual compliance period, including 2 hours of legal ethics or professionalism. The Virginia State Bar CLE Regulations require that at least 4 hours of CLE credit be earned in VA CLE programs that include simultaneous, live interaction with the presenter. Members of the Virginia State Bar must complete all mandatory Virginia CLE credit hours by October 31 and self-report completion of VA CLE by December 15. You must send Certificates of Completion to the Virginia MCLE Board for each CLE course that you complete to receive CLE credit for the course. Failure to properly complete 12 VA bar CLE hours by October 31 will result in a $100 non-compliance fee. Failure to timely report the required Virginia CLE hours by the December 15 CLE reporting deadline will result in an additional $100 late filing fee.
