How many MCLE hours are required?

Fourteen credit hours every year – including 2 required hours of legal ethics. In addition, at least once every 2 years, you must complete 1 hour of substance abuse. The substance abuse credit is part of the general CLE requirement and cannot be applied to satisfy the legal ethics requirement.

How many MCLE hours can I take through Attorney Credits?

There are no special requirements for newly admitted attorneys. Please note that newly admitted attorneys are exempt from MCLE requirements during the reporting year that they are admitted to the South Carolina Bar.

Can I carry hours forward to the next year?

Yes, up to 14 live credit hours may be carried over to the next compliance period, including 2 hours of legal ethics. Extra substance abuse hours will only be applied to the general requirement. Please note that MCLE credit from online MCLE courses may NOT be carried forward to the next compliance period.

Does Attorney Credits verify my completion?

Yes, under the South Carolina MCLE Requirements we must monitor your completion of the course. For online streaming video courses you must click on randomly inserted pop ups to confirm that you are viewing the video.

How do I report the completion of my MCLE requirement at the end of my compliance period?

In January, the Supreme Court of South Carolina Commission on CLE and Specialization will mail you an MCLE compliance report. If the information in your MCLE compliance report is accurate and you have completed your required South Carolina MCLE, you must sign the annual report, have it notarized, and return it before March 1. If your compliance report is incomplete or inaccurate, you need to cure any CLE deficiency or make any necessary corrections to the form and return it before March 1.
