Under Supreme Court Rule 3, Kentucky attorneys must complete at least 12 hours of continuing legal education (CLE) annually. To meet the Kentucky Continuing Legal Education requirement, at least 2 of the 12 CLE hours must be earned in the area of ethics and professional responsibility. The compliance period runs from July 1 through the following June 30 and the CLE reporting date in Kentucky is August 10. Failure to meet the KY Bar CLE requirement can lead to fines and court imposed sanctions, including the suspension of your law license. New lawyers (those attorneys in the first year of membership) have a special CLE requirement under Supreme Court Rule 3.

The Kentucky MCLE Rules allow attorneys to complete all 12 CLE units through online Kentucky CLE courses each annual compliance period. In Kentucky, online CLE courses are considered "technological transmissions", a category that includes videotape, audiotape, satellite simulcast, teleconference, video conference, CD-ROM, data conference, and online CLE courses.
