The legal profession is known for high expectations, intense workloads, and significant stress. While many attorneys successfully manage these pressures, others may develop unhealthy coping mechanisms, including substance misuse. Because many lawyers continue to perform professionally while struggling privately, impairment often goes unnoticed until serious personal, ethical, or professional consequences occur.
This program explores the concept of “high-functioning” substance misuse within the legal profession and examines how addiction can gradually progress from manageable to debilitating. Participants will learn how to recognize common warning signs of impairment, understand the ethical implications of substance misuse for attorneys, and identify available resources for intervention and recovery.
Learning Objectives:
* Define substance misuse disorder and explain how addiction can develop and progress in high-pressure professional environments such as legal practice.
* Identify common warning signs of high-functioning substance misuse, including behavioral, physical, and professional indicators that may signal impairment.
* Recognize the ethical and professional risks that substance misuse can pose for attorneys, including potential impacts on competence, diligence, and professional responsibility.
* Understand the unique stressors faced by legal professionals that may increase vulnerability to substance misuse and mental health challenges.
* Evaluate available resources and intervention strategies, including confidential lawyer assistance programs and peer-support networks.
* Apply practical steps to promote attorney well-being, encourage early intervention, and foster a supportive culture within the legal profession.
Drawing on real-world insights from the legal field and the work of Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers, this session highlights the importance of early recognition, peer support, and confidential assistance programs designed specifically for legal professionals. Attorneys will leave with practical tools to protect their own well-being, support colleagues in need, and maintain the professional integrity required by the legal profession.
