Continuing Legal Education (CLE) is not currently mandatory for Michigan attorneys. But did you know that at one time there was an MCLE requirement in Michigan?

In 1987, a proposal was adopted by the State Bar of Michigan Representative Assembly to make CLE mandatory for Michigan attorneys. However, the State Bar itself eventually asked the Michigan Supreme Court to rescind the mandatory MCLE rule in 1994, which they did. The request was eventually presented to the Michigan Supreme Court and the request for mandatory CLE was withdrawn in 2001.

However, although CLE is not mandatory in Michigan, the wise legal practitioner can use CLE as a tool to enhance their professional competence and become a better lawyer. Further, completing MI CLE courses is a great way to keep current with the law and fulfill your ethical duties. According to Comment 6 to Rule 1.1 of the Michigan Rules of Professional Conduct, "To maintain the requisite knowledge and skill, a lawyer should engage in continuing study and education."
